The Kaunas Jewish Community and the Sugihara Foundation \u201cVisas for Life\u201d invited friends who knew Vladas Var\u010dikas and all who wanted to pay their respects to this gigantic figure, a rescuer of Jews, humanitarian, teacher and violinist, to celebrate hsi 100th birthday with a concert in the Grand Hall at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas. The hall was filled to capacity and overflowing despite the frozen weather.<\/p>\n

Kaunas Jewish Community member Stasys Mak\u0161tutis began to tell the story of Var\u010dikas and the story was continued by his grandmother, Elena Andriu\u0161kevi\u010dien\u0117, who was rescued from the Kaunas ghetto by Var\u010dikas and survived to later become his colleague. Var\u010dikas\u2019s students, students of his students and their children performed music and shared their memories of the man. Actress Kristina Kazakevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117, whose daughter was a student of Var\u010dikas, read out director Kama Ginkas\u2019s recollections of Var\u010dikas, the man who saved him. She also read passages from Reinhard Kaiser\u2019s book about Edwin Geist, whose compositions were rescued for posterity by Var\u010dikas.

\nThe concert lasted for over two hours. Many referred to Var\u010dikas in the present tense, as if he were alive and among the audience. Var\u010dikas\u2019s daughters Sofija Ligija Makut\u0117nien\u0117 and Ramun\u0117 Jarocka and Kaunas Jewish Community chairman Gercas \u017dakas thanked the performers and audience for turning out and honoring the memory of the man.<\/p>\n
