We share moments from the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Matilda Olkinaitė’s birth on June 6. Matilda and her family and neighbors Jofemis were killed in the Sachara peat bog (Rokiškis district) in July 1941 before the massacre of Jews began. Now Matilda Olkinaitė’s name has become a Lithuanian synonym of Anna Frank not only in Lithuania, but also in the world.
Various events took place on the occasion of the commemoration: the performance “Silenced Muses” presented at the Rokiškis Regional Museum, the film “Discovering Matilda”, the documentary-concert “Pillars of Heaven – Sounding Synagogues”, a wooden pillar (author Vidmantas Zakarka) was erected in the square of Panemunėlis railway station, next to the former Olkinai house, and a memorial stone was erected near the Sachara peat bog marking the site of the Holocaust victims.
Project was partially funded by the Good Will Foundation.
