Rabbi Moišė Bairon and his wife Feigel visited the Panevėžys Jewish community on July 31. He is a teacher at Yeshiva “TORAT HEIM” with 250 students in Jerusalem.
Moshe Bairon was born and lives in Israel, has 9 children, of which the eldest son studied at Bnein Brak “Ponevezh” Yeshiva. This was one of the reasons for the trip to Panevėžys – to learn as much as possible about the history of Jews in Lithuania and religious life in Lithuania before the Second World War.
The Jewish community of Panevėžys presented the guests with a book and a film about the Jews of Panevėžys, made in 1932, as well as historical old photographs.
Ms. Bairon wants to present his students with as much information as possible about the Panevezys Yeshiva and its founder Rabbi Josef Kachaneman (1919), about the tragic story when his wife and children were shot in the Kurganava forest in Panevezys during the Holocaust.
When J. Kachaneman was in America with his older son, at the beginning of World War II, he decided to commemorate all the Lithuanian shtetls where Jews once lived and were shot.
