Students studying at the Mechinat Ein Prat Yeshiva of Jerusalem came to the Jewish community of Panevėžys with their leader, Rabbi Avi Poupo. 75 young people came to participate in European Jewish Culture Days, to learn more about the history of Panevėžys and Lithuanian Jews.
The city of Panevėžys is also celebrating its 520th anniversary, students were welcomed at the Panevėžys Yeshiva. Students were interested in the tragic history of the Holocaust in Panevėžys and Lithuania. Gennady Kofman, the chair of Panevėžys Jewish community, shared the information collected in the archives of the community. The students walked around the city and learned that all the events were dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilnius ghetto. The guests also visited the old Jewish cemetery in Panevėžys.
The premises of the Panevėžys Jewish community were filled with student laughter and Jewish songs, the guests feasted and promised to return next year.
