Rosh Hashanah is one of the most important holidays for Jews. It is the beginning of the 5784th Jewish New Year.
On 17 September, a small group of Panevėžys Jewish community members gathered for a picnic in the community courtyard – to taste challah and apples with honey, to wish all the Jews of the world a happy and sweet life, strong health, good friends, and most importantly – good, obedient children.
This year, for the first time, the Jewish Community of Panevėžys was visited by the Lithuanian Jewish Scouts, who came directly from the forest, where they spent two days together with the Panevėžys Scouts. They were given a guided tour of the Jewish heritage of Panevėžys and the history of the Holocaust. After a short rest in the community, the members of the Panevėžys Jewish community and the Scouts sat down to a common festive table laden with traditional Jewish dishes with which they welcomed the coming New Year according to the Jewish calendar. After prayers and candle lighting, the Shofar was blown to symbolize the coming Jewish New Year.
The Scouts were given new Jewish calendars published by the Lithuanian Jewish Community. G. Kofman, Chairman of the community, read greetings from Faina Kukliansky, the Chair of the Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community, and foreign friends. The Scouts were presented with badges of the Panevėžys Jewish Community.
