Ambassador of Israel to Lithuania Hadas Wittenberg Silverstein visited the Jewish community of Panevezys on June 4, 2024.
She met with Gennady Kofman, chairman of the Jewish community of Panevezys, and the board of the community. Over a cup of coffee, the chairman talked about the life of the Panevezys Jewish community and its activities. The rich archive about the life of Panevezys Jews was shown to the honorable guest.
After the meeting, Gennady Kofman introduced the Jewish heritage objects of Panevezys to the ambassador: Yeshiva at Savanoriu a. 11, the former Jewish market at Laisve a., the Chevra Tora synagogue at Valanciaus st. 4, together visited the old Jewish cemetery of Panevezys, Memory Square near the memorial “Sad Mother of Jews” and placed flowers at the monument “Gate of Ghetto”.
The ambassador was introduced to the history of the activities of the JDC in interwar Lithuania at the stele dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the JDC.
