FUNDING GUIDELINES FOR STUDIES OF LITHUANIAN JEWS STUDENTS

  1. Applications to the Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community (LJC) for funding of studies may be submitted by members of the LJC (its umbrella organizations) (high school graduates, current students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, etc.).
  2. Common funding guidelines:

– applicants can receive a grant of up to 50% of the cost of their studies for one academic year, as well as up to 50% of the cost of living and other costs associated with studying at an educational institution;

– priority is given first to funding the applicant’s education/study, and then to funding living costs;

– if the applicant is studying in those countries where tuition fees are payable, and the applicant’s abilities make him/her eligible for unpaid tuition, he/she may apply to the LJC for a reimbursement of up to 50% of his/her living costs (this does not apply to those countries where there are no tuition fees);

– if the applicant is expelled from the studies due to the fault of his/her own (for non-attendance, non-advancement, etc.), he/she is obliged to reimburse the full amount of the funding to the LJC;

– funding for studies (scholarships, living expenses and other costs related to studies) in educational institutions may be re-awarded for the following academic year only after an assessment of the applicant’s (student’s) academic achievements in the previous academic year and after the student has submitted other documents LJC may ask for;

– Funds of LJC for applicants’ studies are not transferred to the applicant’s personal account, but are instead transferred directly to the official bank account of the educational institution.

  1. Applicants may apply for LJC funding throughout the year, but no later than 60 calendar days before the start of the following academic year. The LJC does not reimburse applicants for tuition fees already paid.
  2. Applicants must submit the following documents (certified true copies) to the LJC:

– filled application form (attached below),

– Curriculum Vitae (up to 2 pages),

– Motivation letter (up to 2 pages),

– Parents’ (adoptive parents’) annual income declarations for the last 2 years (or any other document showing this income),

– Document proving a membership in the LJC (or its umbrella organizations),

– other documents the LJC may ask for.

If the application is submitted by a high school graduate, he/she must submit his/her maturity certificate (brandos atestatas) and its annex. If the application is submitted by a current student, an official letter from an educational institution must be submitted stating: the academic results of the previous academic year; the total cost of the student’s studies/education; the cost for one academic year; the information that no tuition fees have been paid; and the cost of living in the accommodation provided by the institution (dormitory, etc.; if provided) for one year. The letter from the academic institution must indicate what scholarship, if any, the student is awarded, whether the academic institution provided the applicant with accommodation (dormitory, etc.) for living purposes, and bank details of the academic institution for a possible bank transfer for the applicant’s tuition fees, should such a decision be made by the LJC.

  1. Applications are evaluated based on the following criteria:

– motivation;

– academic/professional results;

– social activities and activities in the LJC;

– recommendations (by teachers, lecturers, theses/practice supervisor, etc.);

– motivation/goal/capabilities to contribute to the LJC activities;

– parents (adoptive parents) income;

– other criteria if needed by the LJC.

  1. Applicants are informed about the decision either in writing, by email or by phone. The LJC concludes agreements of study funding with the selected applicants.
