When the state of Lithuania was born in 1918, all the nations that lived here took part in its creation. The Lithuanian Jewish Community sincerely participated in that process, seeing the possibility of living in a free and democratic republic after the restrictions of the tsarist government. The new state was defended on the front by Jewish volunteers, and its foundations were strengthened by Jewish politicians, businessmen, lawyers, doctors, and cultural people. They created a state of their hopes in Lithuania. Putting the individual facts in one place, one sees an impressive entirety of those efforts. The authors are glad that after the appearance of the first edition of the book, many representatives of the Jewish Community were honored with monuments and other commemorative signs by the Republic of Lithuania.
