The Good Will Foundation and the Office of the Member of the European Parliament Petras Austrevicius cordially invite you to attend the opening of the III International Creative Symposium dedicated to the memory of Augustinas Savickas. The Good Will Foundation is pleased to have co-sponsored this important event.

This year also marks the 3rd anniversary of the passing of Mr. Savickas, whose professional career lasted more than 50 years and who is well-deservedly called as one of the most important painters of the 20th century in Lithuania. Augustinas Savickas was born in 1919 to a family of Jurgis Savickis, a writer and a Lithuanian diplomat, and Ida Trakiner, a medical nurse and later a dentist,  who herself came from a wealthy Jewish family in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The turbulent and tragic events of 1940s took their toll on Mr. Savickas – his mother killed herself in 1942, his older brother Algirdas, who had married a Jewish woman, followed his wife into the Kovno Ghetto and was later killed there, meanwhile Mr. Savickas, who had originally relocated to the Soviet Union along with the retreating Soviet forces, was sent to a forced work camp in Siberia.

Despite all the hardships and personal tragedies, Augustinas Savickas persevered and returned to Lithuania after WWII, subsequently rising to the ranks of the most influential painters in the country. The mission of the International Creative Symposium dedicated to the memory of Augustinas Savickas is to celebrate the vast and rich heritage of this important artist. The opening ceremony of the III Symposium will take place on 18 August – the event will encompass the presentation of a new exhibition of the works of Augustinas Savickas and a meeting with 11 artists from Lithuania and abroad who have gathered in Vilnius to take part in a workshop, with an opening of an exhibition of their work scheduled for 25 August.
