It is our pleasure, that at the moment so important to Lithuanian history LR Foreign Vice-minister Darius Skusevičius and LR Government Vice-chancellor Deividas Matulionis will participate and give welcoming speeches at the opening of the new and unique sites of the Great Vilna Synagogue complex on July 18, 2019,  11 o’clock.

July 18, 2019 at 11 o‘clock in Great Vilna Synagogue complex a unique place will be uncovered, which are not marked in any historical materials, nor maps or drawings. This object is a cellar under the Bimah, which, highly possible, collapsed during the World War II, when Synagogue was still used. The late collapse of this object allowed to preserve gilded memorial plaques with the inscriptions in Hebrew. Among the ruins the Jekaterina’s the II silver coins from 18th century were also found. To put it in archaeologist’s Justinas Račas words “this is a worldwide unique discovery, as no cellars were found under the Bimah in synagogues across Lithuania”.

Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community and Good Will Foundation Board Chairwoman Faina Kukliansky, Director of Israel Antiquities Authority dr. Jon Seligman and Archeologist from “Kultūros paveldo išsaugojimo pajėgos” Justinas Račas will uncover historical findings to all interested official persons and media representatives on July 18, 2019 at 11 o’clock in Vokiečių str. 13A.

Great Vilna Synagogue archaeological research is financed by the funds of the Good Will Foundation. Project partners – Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community, Israel Antiquities Authority and Vilnius city municipality.
