The Israel Antiquities Authority, Kultūros paveldo Išsaugojimo pajėgos, the Good Will Foundation, and the Jewish Community of Lithuania are pleased to announce the results of the sixth season of excavation at the Great Synagogue of Vilna (Vilnius) & the Shulhoyf.
This year’s excavation, led by Dr. Jon Seligman of the Israel Antiquities Authority and Justinas Racas of the Kultūros paveldo Išsaugojimo pajėgos, with a mixed team of Lithuanian and Israelis, is part of ongoing efforts to develop the site for the benefit of the Lithuanian Jewish community and the general public, including the preservation and presentation of the remains of the Great Synagogue destroyed by the Soviet authorities in the late 1950s.
The current excavations are being financed by the Good Will Foundation and have been conducted over multiple years since 2011.
For the first time extensive sections of the main prayer hall, the ezrat nashim (women;s section) and the huge central Bimah of synagogue, set between four massive columns has been fully exposed after the demolition last year of the school building that once covered the site. As a result, the excavation team was able to reveal the colourful terrazzo floor, comprised of beautiful floral and geometric designs that covered the floors of both the Bimah and the entire synagogue (image).
In the past we have recovered two seating plaques, giving insight on the life and people who prayed in the synagogue. This year multiple plaques were reveled providing names of women praying in the women’s gallery, men seated on the wooden stalls and members of societies involved in the management of the lost Jewish community. The most interesting plaque was for a seat sponsored by ‘Gitel Klachek, the wife of the late Yechezkel, the shamash (sexton) of the city’ (image). The Klachek family was a wealthy family with many businesses in the streets surrounding the Great Synagogue.
Other interesting finds include a Pesach plate, a dreidel, a prayer plaque for Yom Kippur and a library plague inscribed with the Ten Commandments. All these finds remind us that this historic site was for centuries the centre of Jewish life in Vilnius.
Once completed, the remains of the Great Synagogue of Vilna will be preserved and protected and available for viewing as part of a larger project to return Jewish communal life to this place.

שרידי בית הכנסת הגדול של וילנה נחשפים מחדש מתוך האדמה
רשות העתיקות, חברת החפירות הליטאית, קרן רצון הטוב, והקהילה היהודית בליטא שמחים להודיע על תוצאות עונת החפירה השישית של בית הכנסת הגדול בווילנה ובשולוהוף (חצר בית הכנסת).
החפירה השנה, בניהולו של ד”ר יוחנן (ג’ון) זליגמן מרשות העתיקות ויוסטינוס ראקאס מחברת החפירות הליטאית, עם צוות משותף של חופרים ישראליים וליטאיים, הוא חלק ממאמצים המתמשכים לפיתוח האתר לטובת הקהילה היהודית הליטאית והציבור הרחב, כולל שימור והצגה של שרידי בית הכנסת הגדול שנהרס על ידי השלטונות הסובייטיים בסוף שנות ה50.
החפירות הנוכחיות ממומנות על ידי קרן רצון הטוב, חפירות שמתבצעות כבר מספר שנים מאז שנת 2011.
לראשונה, חלקים נרחבים מאולם התפילה הראשי, עזרת הנשים, והבימה המרכזית הענקית של בית הכנסת, הממוקמת בין ארבעה עמודים עצומים, נחשפו לחלוטין לאחר הריסת בניין בית הספר שבעבר כיסה את האתר. כתוצאה מכך, צוות החפירה הצליח לחשוף את רצפת הטרצו הצבעונית, המורכבת מדגמים פרחוניים וגיאומטריים יוצאי דופן שכיסו את רצפות הבימה וכל בית הכנסת (צילום).
בעבר התגלו שני לוחות מושבי בית הכנסת, שסיפקו תובנות על החיי היומיום והאנשים שהתפללו בבית הכנסת. השנה נחשפו מספר רב של לוחיות המושבים בהם נרשמי שמות של נשים שהתפללו בעזרת הנשים, שמות גברים, ומושבים המיועדים לחברי אגודת צדקה גדולה המעורבת בניהול הקהילה היהודית האבודה של ווילנה. הלוחית המעניינת ביותר הייתה למושב בנתרם על ידי ‘גיטל קלעצק, אשתו של המנוח יחזקאל, שמש דמתא’ (העיר) (צילום). משפחת קלעצק הייתה משפחה עשירה המיוחסת, עם עסקים רבים ברחובות סביב בית הכנסת הגדול של ווילנה.
ממצאים מרתקים נוספים כוללים קערת סדר פסח, סביבון של חנוכה, לוחית בו רשומה המילים יום כיפור, ולוחית מתכת בה חרוטים עשרת הדיברות (צילום). כל הממצאים הללו מזכירים לנו כי אתר היסטורי זה היה במשך מאות שנים מרכז החיים היהודיים בווילנה.
לאחר השלמת החפירה יישמרו שרידי בית הכנסת הגדול בווילנה והם יהיו זמינים לביקור כחלק מפרויקט רחב היקף להחזרת חיי הקהילה היהודית למקום זה.
